JJ fish & chicken Greenbriar Pkwy Restaurant: Real Customer Reviews
The “JJ” in JJ Fish & Chicken comes from the founder James J. Green’s first and middle initials. On March 8, 1982, James J. Green pursued the American dream and opened a small fish shop called JJ Fish on Martin Luther King Drive in Chicago, Illinois. In addition to selling fresh fish, he offered a unique twist: for just one extra dollar, customers could get their fish fried in his secret batter and seasoned with his special blend. The fried fish quickly gained popularity, eventually inspiring Green to expand into a full-fledged restaurant business.
Over the next 20 years, JJ Fish grew to operate 90 locations in Chicago alone, eventually expanding nationwide to over 130 restaurants. As of now, JJ Fish & Chicken has 23 locations in Georgia, with 19 of them distributed throughout Atlanta. Today’s review covers the location on the first floor of Greenbriar Mall, just off the western perimeter of Atlanta. Unlike in Korea, U.S. branches don’t use numbered naming conventions, so it’s important to check the address when visiting.
On the day of my visit, I was heading to the domestic terminal at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport to see a friend off to Michigan and decided to make one last stop at Greenbriar Mall for a quick meal. The JJ Fish & Chicken restaurant is located inside the mall, with plenty of parking spaces right in front. After parking conveniently, it’s just a short walk to the entrance. Unlike Korea, where finding a vacant parking spot in a mall often requires driving around multiple times, U.S. parking lots are expansive, making it easy to find a spot.
This location previously housed the Italian seafood restaurant Leonardo’s, which closed down, and JJ Fish & Chicken took over. The building’s exterior remains the same, with only the interior and signage updated.

Upon entering, the aroma of fried food hits immediately. The interior is spacious but surprisingly has few dining tables; most patrons opt for takeout to enjoy at home with family or friends. The central counter is the clear ordering station, featuring an open kitchen that gives off a fast-casual vibe similar to Lotteeria in Korea. Orders are placed sequentially at the counter.
The menu may seem overwhelming at first glance, but it’s organized into five categories: fried seafood, chicken (by cut), sides, desserts, and beverages. Prices vary by quantity, with discounts for larger orders. The signature dish that launched JJ Fish & Chicken is the Whiting (fried whitefish), while chicken wings became a popular addition for broader appeal. Among younger visitors, the Chicken Wing menu is especially favored, as reflected in online reviews. First-time older customers often take some time to navigate the extensive menu. Dessert options and soda add-ons are also plentiful, highlighting the American love for sweet and salty flavors.
JJ Fish & Chicken specializes in fried dishes using a proprietary batter that creates a crispy, savory finish. Beyond chicken wings, most items—including chicken tenders, catfish, and shrimp—receive consistently positive reviews. Many patrons order from the SPECIALS $12.99 mill category, offering a satisfying meal at a reasonable price. Adding a drink and the 8.9% sales tax brings the total to around $17.40 (~₩24,000 at current exchange rates), comparable to a single fried chicken order in Korea. Even dine-in orders are served in disposable containers, emphasizing takeout convenience. Be sure to grab napkins, straws, plastic forks, and small packets of mayonnaise or mustard from the self-service station.
It’s important to note that an 8.9% tax is added to all orders. A major advantage of JJ Fish & Chicken is that no tip is required, which is a relief for those unaccustomed to the typical 15–20% tipping culture in the U.S. The restaurant also has a policy of “No bills over $20”, meaning cash payments are limited to $20. This reduces risk and speeds up transactions, especially as most customers now use Apple Pay or credit cards.

My order included #2 from the. SPECIALS $12.99 mill category (3 PC Perch & 3 PC Tenders) and a Fresh Squeezed Lemonade. The fried items arrived with a small portion of fries, hot and crispy. The fish was free from any fishy odor or bones, perfectly tender inside, while the chicken tenders were plump and juicy with a light, flavorful batter. The seasoning was well-balanced, not overly salty, and complemented by optional condiments like mayonnaise, mustard, ketchup, or hot sauce. The hot sauce, in particular, cut through any richness and enhanced the flavors beautifully.
If you’re driving toward Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport, stopping at JJ Fish & Chicken at Greenbriar Mall is an excellent choice. You’ll enjoy classic American fried food at a reasonable price, with easy parking and a safe environment. The chain is often recommended on Reddit’s r/Atlanta for its crispy, flavorful fried dishes. Though many locations are in lower-income neighborhoods, Greenbriar Mall is clean and secure. For fans of fried food, this is a highly recommended stop. This review is based on my personal experience.
