    Pyeongjidam Cafe Review

Located next to the Suwon Museum of Art, Pyeongjidam Cafe is situated at 847 Jeongjo-ro, Paldal-gu, Suwon, Gyeonggi-do, South Korea. The building itself is a three-story reinforced concrete neighborhood commercial building completed in 1983, with a land area of 179㎡, a building footprint of 144.84㎡, and a total floor area of 569.68㎡. There is no basement level. As of January 2026, the government-assessed land value was approximately KRW 3,304,000 per square meter, or around KRW 11 million per pyeong, reflecting its prime roadside location within a commercial district. However, because the area is subject to overlapping cultural heritage, landscape, and urban planning regulations, development flexibility remains relatively limited.

Preparations for Pyeongjidam — a name that roughly translates to “Capturing Ordinary Moments” — began in late 2019, and the cafe officially opened around April 2020. The business currently occupies two floors in total: the main indoor cafe space on the 3rd floor and the rooftop terrace on the 4th floor. The building does not have an elevator, so guests must use the stairs. Since there is an actual residential unit on the 2nd floor, signs request visitors to keep noise levels down while passing through. The restroom is located midway between the 2nd and 3rd floor staircase landings and is shared by all genders. The door lock password is available upon request from the cafe staff.

The 3rd-floor main space was remodeled in an industrial-style concept while preserving much of the building’s original structural framework, including exposed exterior walls and support columns. Warm white and wood tones soften the raw industrial atmosphere, while carefully placed plants and art objects add to the cafe’s gallery-like ambiance. Overall, the interior feels calm, minimalist, and thoughtfully curated.

The rooftop terrace on the 4th floor can be accessed via the staircase next to the counter. The floor is finished with waterproof coating paint, and the seating arrangement features resort-style tables and chairs paired with parasols for shade from direct sunlight. Since there are relatively few tall buildings nearby, the rooftop offers a fairly open view toward Paldalsan Mountain, although the structure of the surrounding area limits direct views of Hwaseong Haenggung Palace itself.

When I visited on a weekday afternoon, the atmosphere inside the 3rd-floor main cafe felt quiet and relaxed overall. Warm natural sunlight streamed through the large windows, making the entire space feel cozy and inviting. Most guests were casually chatting in small groups, and compared to many cafes in Haenggung-dong’s crowded cafe district, the vibe here leaned much more toward calmness and comfort rather than loud, overly busy energy. There was no waiting line, so we were able to choose our table first before heading to the counter to order.

At the time of my visit, a woman who resembled Jo Eun-byeol — daughter of Korean comedian Lee Seong-mi from '내새끼의연애2(My Child’s Romance 2)' — appeared to be handling both the orders and drink preparation alone. I’m not sure whether she was the owner or simply a staff member. After placing our order, we received a pager and returned to our seats. Since there was one group ahead of us, it took roughly 20 minutes for the drinks and desserts to be prepared.

Near the counter, there was a self-service station stocked with water and wet wipes for customers. While waiting, we sat by the window and spent time talking leisurely. Personally, even the waiting itself felt naturally aligned with the atmosphere of Pyeongjidam. Rather than functioning like a fast-paced franchise cafe designed for quick turnover, this felt more like a space meant for slowing down and enjoying the mood itself.

We ordered four items in total: an iced Americano with added hazelnut syrup, the Matcha Float, the Dubai Chewy Cookie, and the Plain Basque Cheesecake. Realistically, many people who visit Pyeongjidam probably come after seeing photos of the Matcha Float on social media. During my visit, nearly every table seemed to have one, and visually it was clearly the cafe’s signature menu item.

Pyeongjidam’s Matcha Float combines Jeju matcha and Japanese Uji matcha in a blended matcha latte topped with cream and three scoops of Natuur green tea ice cream. Rather than emphasizing the intensely bitter and traditional profile of pure Uji matcha often seen in luxury hotel dessert lounges, the drink feels more balanced and approachable for a wider audience. The first sip delivers the rich, earthy bitterness characteristic of matcha, but as the ice cream slowly melts into the cream, the texture becomes noticeably smoother and creamier. Toward the end, it almost transforms into a dessert latte. That gradual change in texture and flavor is part of what makes the drink so enjoyable. Visually, the generous amount of cream and stacked green tea ice cream create a striking presentation that easily ranks among the most visually satisfying cafe drinks in Haenggung-dong.

The Dubai Chewy Cookie uses kataifi pastry, a dessert ingredient that became trendy in Korea and is now commonly found in cafes and bakeries nationwide. The outer texture feels slightly soft and chewy, somewhat similar to a Korean rice cake pie, while the crispy kataifi filling inside adds a satisfying crunch. The texture becomes increasingly sticky and chewy as you continue eating. The chocolate flavor is quite intense, and the sweetness level is fairly high, making it much more balanced when paired with coffee rather than eaten alone. One detail I appreciated was the presentation: the cookie was carefully shaped and served neatly inside a case, and for dine-in customers like us, the cafe also provided plates, forks, and knives for a more comfortable dessert experience.

The Plain Basque Cheesecake leaned closer to a traditional Basque style. The surface was deeply caramelized, giving off a pronounced toasted aroma, while the inside maintained a moist and creamy texture. It was neither overly dense nor excessively heavy, instead melting smoothly in the mouth. What stood out most to me was the balance between the tanginess of the cream cheese and the sweetness. Some Basque cheesecakes from other cafes can feel overly sweet or leave behind a heavy dairy aftertaste, but Pyeongjidam’s version finished relatively cleanly on the palate. Because of that, it paired surprisingly well with sweeter drinks like the Matcha Float, though personally I thought it matched best with the hazelnut Americano.

The iced Americano itself leaned more toward nuttiness and body rather than acidity, making it approachable and easy to drink. Adding hazelnut syrup gave the coffee a soft roasted sweetness that blended naturally without tasting overly artificial like many franchise-style flavored coffees. It also worked well as a palate cleanser alongside the richer desserts, and as time passed, the lingering sweetness of the hazelnut became even more noticeable.

Overall, Pyeongjidam feels like a cafe where the atmosphere itself is part of the experience, alongside the desserts and drinks. The industrial-style interior — built around exposed structural walls and columns — is softened with warm white and wood tones, while plants, artwork, and sunlit window seating create a highly photogenic environment. It feels intentionally designed to look especially atmospheric in both photos and videos. In fact, many of the drink and dessert presentations featured visually dramatic plating styles with artistic dripping details, resulting in a very high level of visual satisfaction overall.

If you are looking for a stylish and atmospheric cafe in Suwon’s Haenggung-dong area — somewhere that offers more than just coffee, combining thoughtfully designed spaces with visually appealing desserts and drinks — Pyeongjidam is definitely worth visiting at least once.

    Recommended Menu Picks

For first-time visitors, these menu items are highly recommended:

    1. Matcha Float – Pyeongjidam’s signature drink and easily the most visually iconic menu item in the cafe. The blend of Jeju matcha and Japanese Uji matcha creates a rich yet approachable flavor profile, while the generous scoops of green tea ice cream slowly melt into the latte for a creamy dessert-like finish. If it’s your first visit, this is the one menu item you should not skip.

    2. Dubai Chewy Cookie – A highly satisfying dessert with contrasting textures. The chewy outer layer pairs well with the crispy kataifi filling inside, creating a unique bite that becomes even more enjoyable alongside coffee. The strong chocolate flavor and rich sweetness make it an ideal sharing dessert.

    Final Verdict

Pyeongjidam is less about rushing in for a quick coffee and more about enjoying the overall atmosphere of the space itself. From the industrial-style architecture softened by warm wood and white tones to the carefully styled desserts and drinks, nearly every detail feels intentionally designed for a calm and visually satisfying experience.

While the menu quality is solid overall, the cafe’s greatest strength is its ability to combine aesthetic presentation, cozy ambiance, and dessert-focused cafe culture into one cohesive experience. If you are exploring Suwon’s Haenggung-dong area and looking for a stylish cafe that feels both relaxing and photogenic, Pyeongjidam is absolutely worth visiting.

💡 Pro Tip: Visit on a weekday afternoon if possible. The cafe feels significantly more relaxed during off-peak hours, and the natural sunlight through the large windows creates the best atmosphere for both photos and conversation. Rooftop seating is also more enjoyable before sunset, especially on mild spring or autumn days.
