La Cocina De Camelia Restaurant: Real Customer Reviews

We visited Mardi Gras Georgia Festival & Parade in Stone Mountain Village, a small town in DeKalb County located next to Stone Mountain Park. Every February, the village hosts a New Orleans-style Mardi Gras celebration with high school marching bands, dance teams, and live performances. The parade is free, the concerts are free, and the atmosphere feels surprisingly local and warm for a town that has historically carried complicated associations. Today, the community feels far more diverse and multicultural, with Black, Asian, and Hispanic families filling the streets together.

After the parade, we drove back toward Atlanta and decided to stop for dinner in Doraville.

Doraville, especially along Buford Highway, was once considered Atlanta’s original Koreatown, established by first-generation Korean immigrants in the 1970s. While the Korean commercial center has since expanded north to Duluth, Suwanee, and Johns Creek, Doraville remains one of the most diverse international food corridors in metro Atlanta. You can still find Korean restaurants, Korean spas, churches, and K-pop stores here, but now they exist alongside Vietnamese pho shops, Chinese bakeries, and Mexican taquerías.

On this particular evening, despite the growing popularity of Korean cuisine in America, we chose Mexican food. One of our friends, a Venezuelan-American deeply familiar with Latin American flavors, suggested La Cocina De Camelia, a Mexican restaurant and catering business located inside 5979 International Plaza on Buford Highway.

The plaza itself is easy to miss if you rely solely on Google Street View, which has not been updated since 2019. But once you turn into the entrance, a wide open surface parking lot appears immediately. There is no gate and no parking fee. In Atlanta, that matters. You park wherever you like, step out of your car, and walk straight into the building. The simplicity of that experience is something I increasingly appreciate when dining in the United States.

Inside, the dining area is spacious, with tables comfortably spaced apart. There is counter seating near the kitchen and clearly marked restrooms inside the restaurant, separated for men and women. You may sit anywhere. When seated, you are given a menu. Not everything is written in English, so unless you are familiar with traditional Mexican dishes, you may need to ask questions. The staff was kind and willing to explain. If you prefer a quieter approach, translation apps work well.

This restaurant operates on a cash-only model, which honestly surprised me in 2026. Credit cards are not accepted. However, they offer a cash discount, and we were able to pay via bank transfer. There is no tipping required. Because of that structure, the overall cost remains noticeably lower than many comparable restaurants in metro Atlanta.

I ordered three chorizo tacos and a side of arroz. The total, after an 8 percent sales tax and a small cash discount, came to $18.18. For Atlanta pricing, especially in 2026, that is impressive.

Before our food arrived, we were given a large cup of iced water with fresh lime slices at no charge. Complimentary nachos and dipping sauce were also provided. The chips were crisp but not overly hard. One of our friends is currently undergoing orthodontic treatment, yet even he could comfortably bite into them. It was a small but thoughtful detail.

When the chorizo tacos arrived, the aroma came first. The scent of seasoned pork, lightly smoky and warmly spiced, rose immediately. The chorizo was savory without being greasy, and the paprika-based seasoning added depth rather than sharp heat. Instead of a crunchy hard shell, the tacos were wrapped in soft, pillowy tortillas that absorbed the juices of the meat. Each bite felt balanced. The saltiness, the spice, the richness of the pork, and the brightness from the salsa worked together rather than competing.

The salsa had a slightly stronger kick than what many Americans might expect. For Korean palates, however, it felt comfortably within range—spicy, yes, but pleasantly so. It was not painfully hot; it was the kind of heat that builds gently and keeps you reaching for another bite. A squeeze of fresh lime sharpened the entire flavor profile, adding a clean citrus note that lifted the richness of the meat.

The arroz was understated but essential. Lightly sautéed before being simmered with tomato, broth, and seasoning, the rice grains remained distinct rather than mushy. It was not aggressively seasoned, which allowed it to function as a stabilizing companion to the tacos. Each spoonful carried mild tomato fragrance and a soft, nutty warmth. It felt comforting, almost quiet, in contrast to the more expressive chorizo.

Before visiting, I read several Google reviews expressing concerns about service or pricing. My experience was different. The owner was polite. The restaurant was clean. The sauces, even for dine-in guests, were served in sealed plastic containers with tight-fitting lids, which felt hygienic and intentional. The lime slices were fresh and vibrant, not dried out or oxidized. Most importantly, no one in our group experienced any digestive discomfort afterward, which is always an honest measure of ingredient freshness.

Portion sizes were generous. We left completely full. For college students or young professionals looking for affordable Mexican food in Doraville, this is a strong option. The value-to-satisfaction ratio is high.

If you find yourself in Doraville, Georgia, or driving along Buford Highway in the Atlanta area, La Cocina De Camelia is worth considering for a filling, budget-friendly meal. This was a fully self-funded visit, and the impressions shared here reflect my direct experience.

    Recommended Menu Picks

For first-time visitors, these menu items are highly recommended:

    1. Chorizo Tacos – Smoky, savory, and moderately spicy with soft tortillas.

    2. Arroz (Mexican Rice) – Mild, balanced, and a perfect side to complement the tacos.

    Final Verdict

A budget-friendly Mexican spot in Doraville offering generous portions, solid flavor, and practical value—especially for students or casual group dining.

💡 Pro Tip: Bring cash (card not accepted) and take advantage of the cash discount. Ask for salsa on the side if you are sensitive to spice.
