The area around Sadang Station, where Dongjak-daero and Gwacheon-daero intersect, serves as a major transport hub connecting Seoul with its satellite cities. From a consumer perspective, “Sadang-dong” is often understood as a single commercial zone encompassing both the Sadang Station and Isu Station areas.

However, administratively, the left side of Dongjak-daero is Sadang 1-dong, while the right side is Bangbae 2-dong. Sadang 1-dong conveys the image of an older, worn-down urban center, whereas Bangbae 2-dong gives the impression of a clean, redeveloped district. In particular, the area near Isu Station Exits 5 and 6 in Bangbae 2-dong is flat, has well-maintained roads, and features a harmonious mix of large apartment complexes and office buildings. The area is also home to banks, the National Health Insurance Service, tax firms, patent offices, labor law offices, and medical clinics.

Compared to the public commercial zone across the street, which includes Sadang 1-dong’s Namseong Saje Market and surrounding food alley, the culinary standards at the officetel commercial zone near Isu Station Exit 6—specifically around Seyang Arbi-che—are notably higher. This is largely thanks to the adjacent 744-unit Bangbae Lotte Castle Arte apartment complex. It is in this area that the contemporary Chinese restaurant Wolryang is located.

The restaurant’s CEO is named Han Hyo-joo, which might momentarily make one wonder if it’s affiliated with the actress of the same name. It is not. The name belongs to the wife of Yang Ki-chang, Wolryang’s owner-chef, who has dedicated over 20 years to Chinese cuisine. In this setup, the husband focuses entirely on cooking and developing new dishes in the kitchen, while the wife manages the restaurant’s overall operations and branding. The couple originally met as friends and later became life partners.

We visited YUELIANG on a Saturday for lunch as walk-ins, without a reservation. Both weekdays and weekends are busy, and lunch hours are the peak time, but fortunately, there were available seats, so we could order immediately without waiting. Each table is equipped with a mini tablet-style kiosk for ordering and payment, and the menu supports multiple languages, including English, making it convenient for foreign visitors. The two of us ordered one Jjamppong, one Chinese-style cold noodles, and one yuzu highball. They provide either chilled water or hot tea by default, allowing you to refresh your throat according to your preference.

First, the yuzu highball was served. The moment the glass touched my lips, a subtle yuzu aroma rose, followed by the sparkling fizz that released the rich, mellow scent of whiskey. Its sweet yet slightly bitter yuzu finish lingered, pairing surprisingly well with the rich Chinese dishes. It felt like a reset button for every bite, refreshing the palate.

Next, the Chinese-style cold noodles and jjambbong were served together. YUELIANG’s Chinese cold noodles are a seasonal item, available only in the summer. When you lift the first bite with chopsticks, the springy noodles wriggle enticingly between them. As soon as you take a bite, the sweet-and-sour sauce bursts in your mouth, subtly accompanied by the nutty aroma of peanut sauce. The lightly meaty, chilled broth adds a mysterious depth, balancing with a hint of tanginess and refreshing clarity. It’s not just a simple cold noodle dish—it’s a bowl where the essence of Chinese cuisine meets the coolness of summer.

YUELIANG’s jjambbong delivers an intense smoky aroma the moment you take your first spoonful. The broth is red but not overwhelmingly spicy, carrying the deep umami of the seafood, leaving a rich, lingering flavor in your mouth. Squid, mussels, and large shrimp are generously included, making every bite feel abundant. Unlike spicier versions, this jjambbong emphasizes the smokiness and umami, creating an addictive taste that draws you in. The lingering charred aroma is subtly nutty, and the clear yet deeply flavored broth leaves your stomach feeling comfortably satisfied even after the meal.
